For employees that work in rural or regions designated as remote areas, they could be able to salary package mortgage or rent payments.

There is a range of housing expenses that can be packaged which include:

  • The interest on the remote area property mortgage (although this will incur 50% Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT))
  • Electricity/gas expenses if the mortgage/rent is packaged as a remote area benefit (will incur 50% FBT).
  • Half of the private rental costs without incurring FBT
  • Employer provided rental costs

For more information, employees should contact their employer to see if this is available as part of their workplace benefits program.
