Employees whose employer requires them to move for work purposes can salary package the relocation expenses. This is irrespective of whether their accommodation is bought or rented and can include:

  • Storage
  • Removal of household items
  • Cost of connecting utilities (including gas, telephone and electricity)

The following expenses can be salary packaged when a new home is bought:

  • Advertising
  • Agent commission
  • Legal fees
  • Stamp duty
  • Borrowing expenses

If renting, the cost of temporary rental accommodation could be salary packaged for both the family at the former home and the employee in the new location.

This is only eligible to those whose employer is one of the following and who offers this as part of their workplace benefits program including:

  • Government department/agencies
  • Charities
  • Not-for-profit organisations
  • Private organisations

Employees should contact their employer to see if this benefit is available to them and also to clarify the conditions around the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption.
