Safer roads start with us: National Road Safety Week
By SG Fleet | 12 April 2026
Every year, organisations, communities, and drivers across Australia come together to recognise National Road Safety Week. It’s a moment to pause and reflect on the real impact of road trauma and the role we all play in making sure everyone gets home safely every day.
The numbers are sobering. Each year in Australia, around 1,300 people lose their lives on the road and tens of thousands more are seriously injured. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a community and loved ones affected by a tragedy that, in many cases, could have been prevented.
That’s why the message behind this year’s National Road Safety week is simple but powerful: drive so others survive.
Small actions make a big difference
Safer roads don’t rely on one single change. Instead, they’re built on everyday decisions made by every road user.
Removing distractions, respecting speed limits, driving when well-rested and staying alert to vulnerable road users can all make a difference. The National Road Safety Week pledge encourages drivers to think about the people who matter most to them and drive as if those loved ones are on the road ahead.
It’s a simple mindset shift, but one that can have a lasting impact.
Why road safety matters for businesses
For organisations that rely on vehicles to keep their people and operations moving, road safety is more than a campaign, it’s a responsibility.
Businesses with drivers on the road have a unique opportunity to influence safer behaviour. By combining clear policies, driver education, training and telematics-led insights, businesses are able to identify risk and support behaviour change. Ultimately, every step taken to improve safety helps protect employees and the wider community.
A message behind the movement
National Road Safety Week was founded by Peter Frazer OAM, following personal tragedy, with a mission to reduce road trauma and save lives. His message is a powerful reminder of why this week matters, and why safer driving is something we should never take for granted.

A shared responsibility
National Road Safety Week is a reminder that safer roads require collective action. Governments, businesses and individuals all have a role to play in creating a safer transport environment.
For organisations managing fleets, that starts with recognising the influence of driver behaviour and supporting employees with the tools, training and vehicles they need to drive safely.
Whether you’re managing a fleet, commuting to work, or heading out on a weekend drive, the choices you make behind the wheel matter.
Take a moment to make your commitment in anticipation of this National Road Safety Week (May 17-24). Make the pledge here and join thousands of Australians choosing to drive so others survive.
