A quick explainer

When novating an eligible EV, your car’s finance and running costs are paid entirely from your pre-tax salary. This equates to thousands of savings on income tax and GST each year of your lease. ​

Eligible EVs are any Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) priced under the applicable luxury car tax threshold, presently $91,387.

A deeper dive

The Aus Gov Electric Car Discount exempts eligible EVs from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT).  ​Typically applied to novated leases, FBT offsets some of the tax-effectiveness achieved by salary packaging a car. For petrol/diesel vehicles, both pre- and post-tax lease payments are necessary to minimise FBT.

 

With no FBT, there’s no need for post-tax lease payments.  ​All running costs are paid from your pre-tax salary.
